Meet M. L. Gallagher
M. L. Gallagher was born in Charleston, West Virginia, in 1950 and grew up surrounded by the mountains and history of her home state. From a young age, she developed an interest in both horses and the stories connected to the places around her. She later attended West Virginia University in Morgantown, where she completed her education before pursuing an equestrian career.
A Lifelong Connection with Horses
Gallagher’s passion for riding developed under the guidance of Mrs. Anne Spillman, a fellow West Virginian who introduced her to foxhunting and horse showing. Those early experiences helped shape a path that would become a central part of Gallagher’s life.
Her equestrian career includes:
- Owning and operating Ridge Point Equine for more than fifty years
- Teaching and mentoring riders throughout her career
- Helping students qualify for the USEF Pony Finals
- Preparing students who competed in all three national medal finals
- Continuing to ride and teach today
From Equestrian Life to Storytelling
Gallagher’s writing is also influenced by her interest in history. While riding near Highlands, North Carolina, she encountered a pre-Civil War cabin connected to a tragic local story. That experience later inspired an alternate version of events that became Return Home.
Her familiarity with horses, rural landscapes, and history gives her stories a personal foundation rooted in experiences that have stayed with her throughout her life.
Life Beyond Writing
M. L. Gallagher is a widow and the mother of one daughter, who is also an equestrian. Horses remain an enduring connection across generations of her family.
